What is RLT Coaching? A Guide to Relational Life Therapy

by Birgit Huvendieck · Klangmassage & Entspannung Braunschweig

Maybe you've been searching for a couples therapist and stumbled across the term. Or a friend mentioned it. Or you've been listening to Terry Real on a podcast and thought: this sounds different.

RLT coaching. Relational Life Therapy. Something about it caught your attention.

I understand that feeling. It caught mine too – and then it changed my life. First my own relationship, then my work. So let me tell you what RLT actually is, why it's different from most approaches to couples therapy, and whether it might be right for you.

What is Relational Life Therapy?

RLT stands for Relational Life Therapy – a direct, honest, and deeply compassionate approach to couples and individual coaching developed by Terry Real, an internationally recognised family therapist, speaker, and New York Times bestselling author.

Terry's work has reached millions of people through his books, through appearances on Oprah Winfrey, Good Morning America, and more recently through a widely shared podcast conversation with Tim Ferriss. His core message is simple and radical at the same time:

Relational skills are not something you either have or don't have. They can be learned.

Most of us were never taught how to be in a relationship. Not really. We learned from what we saw growing up – patterns that made sense in our families of origin, but that play out again and again in our adult relationships, often in ways we don't understand and can't seem to change.

RLT works with exactly those patterns.

What makes RLT different?

Traditional couples therapy often aims for neutrality. The therapist holds back, both partners speak, insight slowly builds. That has its value.

RLT takes a different approach. It is direct, concrete, and honest – while remaining deeply warm and caring.

  • Instead of tiptoeing around difficult dynamics, RLT names them clearly and compassionately

  • Instead of focusing only on insight and understanding, RLT builds practical relational skills for everyday life

  • Instead of staying neutral, the RLT coach gives honest feedback – what's working, what isn't, and why

Terry Real puts it simply: "Intimacy is a minute-to-minute practice." Not the big conversation once a year. What happens daily between two people – in small moments, in the way you speak to each other, or don't.

And what surprises many of my clients: change comes faster than expected. Not because RLT is a shortcut, but because it goes straight to the core.

Our relationships as our biosphere

One of Terry Real's ideas that resonates most deeply with me is this: our relationships are our biosphere – the ecosystem in which we live, breathe, and either flourish or wither. Just as the earth needs care to stay alive and in balance, our relationships need honest attention and nourishment.

As someone who began her career as an ecologist, this image speaks to something I believe deeply: everything is connected. How we treat ourselves, how we show up for each other, how we relate to the world around us – it's all part of the same fabric. Healing a relationship doesn't just help two people. It strengthens something much larger.

Who is RLT coaching for?

RLT is for couples and individuals – and I mean that genuinely.

Couples who keep having the same argument. Who feel like strangers in their own home. Who are wondering: do we stay, or do we go?

But also individuals who want to understand why the same patterns keep showing up in their relationships. Who are rebuilding after a separation. Or whose partner isn't ready to come – yet.

RLT works for all relationship forms and sexual orientations – monogamous, non-monogamous, LGBTQ+. Relational skill is human, not tied to any particular form.

One honest note: RLT is trauma-informed, but it is not trauma treatment. For acute trauma or severe mental health conditions, other support is needed first.

Working with me

I am a certified RLT coach trained by Terry Real, based in Braunschweig, Germany. I work in person and online – in German and English.

For international clients, online sessions via Zoom are a natural fit. Many of my clients are based outside Germany and find that the online format works beautifully – sometimes even better than in person, because you can join from the comfort of your own home, wherever in the world that is.

If you're curious whether RLT coaching might be right for your situation, I warmly invite you to a first conversation. No pressure, no commitment – just an open exchange about what you're looking for and what's possible.
