Cells and Sound

A study by Prof. Dr Maria Anna Pabst, Medical University of Graz, 2009

Prof. Dr Maria Anna Pabst, Professor of Cell Biology, Histology and Embryology at the Medical University of Graz, conducted a study in 2009 on the effect of sounds (Peter Hess® therapeutic singing bowl: Heart Bowl) on cells in cell cultures. This study shows that the vibrations of the singing bowls exert an influence on certain cell functions.

Initial evidence was found to suggest that the sounds tend to have a stimulating effect. This is because it was found that the total cell count following sound exposure and the number of living cells were significantly higher than in the control group. Furthermore, it was observed that the amount of cell debris following sound exposure was roughly the same as in the control group, although the number of dead cells was slightly lower.
